April 15, 2010. More than nine years ago, I wrote the first post in this blog. Nine years! I would not have imagined that back then.
This very post is the 600th post to be published. Also something I would not have imagined.
Going travelling back then was one of the most important turning points in my life. Having just been laid off, I could just as easily have applied for a new job and continued with business as usual.
No more Vacations

It’s pretty crazy that flying to the south of Spain is cheaper than taking a fast train to the Baltic Sea coast. The food in Andalusia is cheaper as well, so going there for a couple of days is a really affordable option.
For me it felt good to get out of my regular environment for a few nights. It’s not so much that I needed a break, that I was ready for a vacation.

I get the impression that my family worries a bit about me not making a proper living at the moment. Worries about me not investing more effort into getting my freelance business off the ground.
Their observation about work and business not being at the top of my priority list, at the moment, is sound. And the subsequent concerns are understandable. After all, here in Germany, work and a steady income are widely considered the most important things in life. In fact, lots of people actually define themselves through their job.
I too did that, a long time ago. Gained my self-esteem from my position as a successful software engineer. Was so keen on it all that I even took work home. But those times - fortunately - are long gone.

Three Months Berlin (and counting)

There’s a big change ahead! On the 31st of this month I’m expecting to receive the keys to my new place in the borough of Pankow. By then it’ll have been more than 15 months since I moved out of the last place in Stuttgart.
Since arriving in Berlin, my priorities have changed a fair bit. Initially I was after accommodation in a flat-share, as I had grown quite accustomed to living communally.

Why Berlin?
That question I got a lot recently and it actually encloses two questions: Why put an end to my travelling and why choose Berlin as final destination? The former has been addressed in a previous post, written somewhere over the icy shores of Greenland, and doesn’t need much addendum.
Which leaves the question of why I chose Berlin as a place of residence.
Over the course of the last ten years I have lived in various cities in different countries.

Flying over Ice

There’s icebergs floating down there. Somewhere between Greenland (unfitting name) and Canada, the sea looks incredibly cold. I’ve spent a fair bit of the flight with looking out the window and thinking about going to a country I was never much interested in. Thinking about how it came to that.
Retracing my steps, it started in spring 2015. Back then I was deeply unhappy with my (work-)life and was looking for ways out.
